“And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.” Ephesians 4:30
This afternoon I walked through the room where my daughter and a friend were watching television. The show that was on was about teenage girls doing teenage things- they were doing certain things they thought were “cute” that weren’t, living like the world and thinking that it was “cool” to do so. After I left the room, I made the comment to the Lord, “Lord, I know you are grieved by what You see going on in the world.” His comment back to me was, “I am more grieved about what some of My children are doing.”
God isn’t as grieved when He sees the world behaving in a certain manner as He is when He sees His people portraying certain attitudes and actions. The world doesn’t know any better, they are living in darkness and can’t see what’s wrong until the light comes in. The children of God, on the other hand, know better. We are the salt of the earth and the light of the world. We have been called to live a holy life, practice righteous living, have a Christ-like attitude, be people of integrity, godly character, walk uprightly, bear the Fruit of the Spirit, and hold up a Biblical standard. It grieves God when He sees His own children acting like “heathens”. He’s grieved when He sees them involved in immoral lifestyles, when He sees them being dishonest, cheating and lying. He’s grieved when they are indulging in sinful habits, when they break the law, when they are bitter, unforgiving, and unkind, and when they neglect their relationship with Him.
God is either grieved or pleased with our lives. As His children we should live a life that desires to please Him in all that we do. Sure, we all stumble and fall on occasion, but is it just an occasional fall or does it sum up your life? Ask yourself this morning, does my lifestyle- my actions and attitudes- please God or grieve God? If they grieve Him, fall on your face and repent. If they please Him, fall on your face and ask Him to help you live a life that is pleasing to Him all the rest of the days of your life.
