“Is not the whole land before thee? separate thyself, I pray thee, from me? if thou wilt take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if thou depart to the right hand, then I will go to the left.” Genesis 13:9
When the time came for Abraham and Lot to separate, Abraham gave Lot first choice- if Lot chose to go to the right Abraham would go to the left, or vice versa. Abraham waited, he didn’t not push his way to get to choose first. Abraham knew God had a plan and a promise for him, yet he patiently waited while Lot made the first choice.
This is so unlike us now days. When we know that God has called us to a particular area, when we know that the Lord has said that He was going to give us this thing or open that door, we tend to want to “push ahead of everyone else” in order to “not miss” what God has given us. We get afraid that if we aren’t “first in line” someone else is going to get our blessing. Abraham was not fearful that Lot was going to get what God had promised him just because he went first. Actually, the faith in knowing “what God has promised to bless me with, no one else can have” is what gave Abraham the grace and patient to tell Lot to choose first.
You don’t have to push your way ahead to the front of the line in order to make sure you get what God has promised you. If you will trust and believe that what God has promised you no one else can get, then you will be able to wait at the back of the line without fear, anxiety, or impatience.
