If you are like me, your emails are flooded with people listing their New Year’s Resolutions. Somehow, I guess, if you put them in writing, then there is a sense of commitment involved.
Personally, I loathe New Years Resolutions because they are generally very “me” centered. Some are worthy- be nicer to that person at work that gets on my nerves, pray more, read the Bible in a year, etc. Even lose weight or exercise more.
I’m not saying we should not have personal improvement goals. Sure we should. But this year, spend some quiet, quality time with your Heavenly Father who created you to be you. Ask Him what He wants you to work on this year. Then be bold enough to ask Him to help you do it. Odds are you will have a much easier time keeping this year’s resolutions if you do because they will not be yours, but His for you.
I belong to an order of women prayer and service warriors. Our motto has a phrase in it –
What I can do, by the grace of God I will do. Lord, what will you have me do?
What if we all resolved to pray that before our feet hit the floor each morning? How different would our lives be? Paul told the Colossians – Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving. See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ. (Colossians 2:6-8 ESV)
In 2013 I want to be rooted and built up – I resolve to walk with Christ instead of asking Him to follow me down this life road. I resolve to let Him set the pace and the path, not try to tug Him into a direction I want to go and then ask for His blessings and protection. I will not try to find Scripture to justify my life but will justify my life to Scripture. No matter where 2013 leads, I will abound in thanksgiving – all for His glory instead of my own.
Will you join me?
