Lately, God has been my commercial God. That is not a bad thing.
Commercials are breaks in programs. As I go through my day, doing what must be done, God’s sound bites break through the day to day story of my life. Just when the plot thickens, the organ music goes “tah-dah”, or the pregnant pause dangles, He appears with a message for me. He gets my attention and breaks me away from the situation.
Commercials are usually designed to catch our attention, are short and sweet, and often memorable. He will do a little something I know is a “God thing”, or His Spirit will whisper to my soul. He will make sure I hear a stanza in a song, or a passage in the Bible that chills my spine, because it is an answer, sometimes before I audibly ask.
Sometimes, commercials are repeated again and again until we get the message. God knows my Irish head can get a bit thick at times. I believe He has a velvet 2X4 to whack me over that head now and then. Often times, I need to hear His message several times before I get to the “Ah-hah” moment. Oh, are you wanting my attention, God?
Commercials often give us subtle messages hidden in the tale. When my son was younger and had sleep-overs, we’d play a game. We called it “Clues”. I’d write clues on pieces of paper and hide them (in plain sight). Each clue led to the location of the new clue until a plate of cookies or little toy was revealed at the last location. Often times, I think God plays “Clues” with me. He drops little hints during my day to remind me He is there and cares – like love notes – often hidden in plain view. It happened just yesterday. I lost an earring- not a pricey one but one that was precious to me. I didn’t know it until I undressed for the night. I had no idea where it could be since I had been running errands, in meetings, etc. all day long. But, there is was, gleaming on the kitchen counter! I heard God whisper, “I interrupt this program to bring you a message . . . I love you.”
During the hustle bustle commercialism of the season, don’t ignore the holy ones – the ones from the Maker of your day. It just may make your day!
