I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord;
I have no good apart from you.” Psalm 16:2
I saw on the news last night new atheistic banners that say we don’t need God at Christmas, just be good for goodness sakes. Oh, how misguided!
Maybe that works for Santa Claus coming to town, but not in preparing the way for our Savior to come to us. There is no good in man. That is a misconception. No matter how hard we try, we can never be “good enough” to stand before the Holy and Perfect God. It is human nature to be prideful, selfish, envious, greedy and lust after things. Sure, we can try hard, but perfection is not natural.
Other religions strive through all sorts of means to reach up to a level of acceptance with their gods. Only Christianity shows the way God strives to reach down to man. He came as an infant into our world and through His sacrifice, gave Himself up to the most excruciating, humiliating and painful death known to man at the time. He did it all for our sakes- so we can be made “good”. He did it for goodness sakes.
John tells us that “If anyone sins we have an advocate with Father, Jesus Christ the Righteous and He is the atonement for our sins, and not ours alone but the sins of the whole world.” 1John 2:1-2
This season, tell your kids to be good for Santa, but also tell them about the Babe who came so we can all be made good enough through Him. That is the true meaning of Christmas, for goodness sakes.
