Ups and Downs Along the Journey

He makes “grass to grow upon the mountains” . . . meditate on that for just a moment.

A while back as I listened to a guest pastor share the Word of God at our local church, my heart suddenly leapt within me. God opened my eyes to an important truth through his simple sharing. Although he used this illustration in a slightly different context, today’s verse brought life to it as God stirred within my heart.

Who covereth the heaven with clouds, who prepareth rain for the earth, who maketh grass to grow upon the mountains.” (Psalm 147:8)

God’s Divine Order

Draw nigh to God, put our trust in the Lord that we may declare His works.

God’s divine order would have it that we first and foremost cultivate our relationship with Him, for without it there is no foundation for trust and there is no passion for the testimony of His works. It is a good thing for man to carefully pursue and secure a relationship with God, above all things. As God draws near to us, we must run to meet Him, thus drawing near to Him. It is not only our duty; it should be our desire to have an ongoing and ongrowing relationship with Him.

Audience of One

After they had gotten the ark situated and the tabernacle built, the Levites assumed their work was done and began to walk off.  David immediately stopped them, telling them that their work had only just begun.  You can hear the Levites complaining to David: “But, David!  We just walked miles with the ark on our shoulders; we’ve prepared and sacrificed thousands of animals to the Lord.  Aren’t we done yet?  And besides, there’s no veil or Holy of Holies!”

Pour It Out

Have you ever found yourself struggling with the right words to pray when things are tough?  Do you find yourself guarding your own words so you don’t say the wrong thing or become too vulnerable in your prayers?  One of the hardest things for us to do is to be down-right honest and transparent with our Father when we’re hurt, in trouble, or facing major difficulties.

Listen to the passion in David’s words today: “I poured out my complaint before Him; I showed before Him my trouble.” (Psalm 142:2)

A Problem Exposed

The words of the prophet Haggai exposed a problem: “Ye have sown much, and bring in little; ye eat, but ye have not enough; ye drink, but ye are not filled with drink; ye clothe you, but there is none warm; and he that earneth wages earneth wages to put it into a bag with holes. Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Consider your ways.”  (Haggai 1:6-7)

The Eternal Unseen

Life as a believer is not easy—God never promised us it would be.  The Apostle Paul addresses this in 2 Corinthians 4:17.

For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.”

But, wait a minute!  “Light and momentary troubles?”  The Apostle Paul apparently didn’t understand what it takes to live in today’s world.  After all, if he really understood he wouldn’t have used those words.  It might have been more accurate for him to start his sentence with: “For our unrelenting and debilitating troubles…”

Don’t Throw in the Towel

As we read the Word, there are times a single verse stands out and makes us stop to ask some questions. Hebrews 11:16 is one such verse:

“Instead, they were longing for a better country-a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.”

I began to consider this verse and mull it over in my mind. I asked myself if God is not ashamed to be called their God, what would have made Him feel ashamed to be called their God? The answer was right there—God would feel ashamed to be called their God if they had not believed His promise.
