Noisy Joy
By Julie B Cosgrove | 2 Comments
Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth! Serve the LORD with gladness! Come into his presence with singing!
(Psalm 100:1-2 ESV)
I can’t sing. Even my cats stare at me when I try. Trouble is, I love to sing- always have. I worship best through songs. They can lift my soul, open my heart and float my prayers heavenward. This psalm always encouraged me because it states I can make a joyful noise, which pretty much describes what comes out of my mouth.
But, look at the rest of the verse.

In the Heat
By Julie B Cosgrove | Comments Off
The Lord appeared to Abraham by the oaks of Mamre, as he sat at the door of his tent in the heat of the day. Genesis 18:1
For a nomad, the heat of the day was the time to rest. Stay out of the sun. Living in Texas where the heat index has been 108 degrees, I understand that concept. So, why did God appear to him then instead of in the cool of the morning or as the sun set and and the desert plains cooled? Perhaps to get Abraham’s attention since no one should have been out and about that time of day. Maybe to see if Abraham would come out in the sweltering heat to offer him hospitality ( which he did).

Backyard Thriving
By Julie B Cosgrove | Comments Off
We have a small squirrel who has taken up residence in our backyard, which is unusual because we live in a newer neighborhood – the kind with seven foot trees just beginning to grow. We bought the property because it is at the back of the subdivision and actually had two good sized trees in back and nothing but a field behind us. But, that is not enough of a highway system to attract a squirrel. This isn’t a natural habitat for him. All we can figure is the little guy must have escaped the talons of one of the hawks and plopped down in our yard. And here he remains. He has made a nest in one of the trees and is eating out of the bird feeder. We give him apple cores. He drinks from the birdbath. He is thriving just fine.

Just Feed ‘em

When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. And he began to teach them many things. And when it grew late, his disciples came to him and said, “This is a desolate place, and the hour is now late. Send them away to go into the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.” But he answered them, “You give them something to eat.” Mark 6:34-37

Serve It Up
By Julie B Cosgrove | Comments Off
And immediately he left the synagogue and entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. Now Simon’s mother-in-law lay ill with a fever, and immediately they told him about her. And he came and took her by the hand and lifted her up, and the fever left her, and she began to serve them. Mark 1:29-31
Women are not supposed to get sick. We are the healers, the bad-aid appliers, the Doctor Moms. We are the ones that in spite of fever, sniffles or stomach viruses, still fix school lunches, find socks and clean up after the pet. We do four loads of laundry, go to the store, balance the checkbook and make sure the bills are paid on time while we go through another box of Kleenex and down the cough syrup. We never get sick.

He. . .is me
By Julie B Cosgrove | Comments Off
For he delivers the needy when he calls,
the poor and him who has no helper.
He has pity on the weak and the needy,
and saves the lives of the needy.
From oppression and violence he redeems their life,
and precious is their blood in his sight. Psalm 72:12-14
Sounds like God, right? He delivers the needy when they call upon him,and redeems their lives from violence and oppression. Their very existence (blood) is precious in his sight.

Amidst His people

“After the king [David] was settled in his palace and the Lord had given him rest from his enemies around him, he said to Nathan the prophet, “Here I am living in a palace of cedar, while the ark of God remains in a tent.” 2 Samuel 7:1-2
David meant well. He wanted to build God a marvelous temple to live in as a gesture of thanksgiving for all the Lord had done for him. The Lord had been his guide, his refuge, his warrior in the battles David faced. David knew his strength came from God alone.
