What Have You Done?

By Julie B Cosgrove | 1 Comment

Psalm 50:3-5  Our God comes; he does not keep silence; … He calls to the heavens above and to the earth, that he may judge his people:  “Gather to me my faithful ones, who made a covenant with me by sacrifice!”

I often hear people talk of the Day of Judgment when Christ comes to claim His own and we all stand before God and hopefully hear the words “Well done good and faithful servant.” Perhaps that is what Psalm 50 is referring to. But it occurred to me that every day is a mini-Judgment Day.  Yes, I am forgiven if I ask to be and confess my sins.  But the Christian walk should be more than “transgression confession”.

Keep It Up

John 3:22-23   After this Jesus and his disciples went into the Judean countryside, and he remained there with them and was baptizing.  John also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because water was plentiful there, and people were coming and being baptized.

Have you ever been ginning along in whatever ministry you were doing, only to have someone else come along and start doing it as well?  Here you thought your were doing God’s will, you seemed to be making a difference and people were taking notice of your efforts. Why would God send someone else? Had you failed?  It is human nature to be competitive, and that opens the door for pride, doubt and the devil.

Handel’s Messiah

By Jan Ross | Comments Off

Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.”  (Matthew 1:23)

One of the most majestic and anointed musical compositions of all times was written by George Frideric Handel in the 1700’s.  One writer (1) stated, “As it turns out, The Messiah is either a Bible study with a beautiful concert attached, or a wonderful piece of classical music with a free Bible study included at no extra charge. I can’t decide which. I do remember reading that when Handel was alive, the Messiah was one of the most often performed pieces of music in concert, and that Handel gave away most of the profits obtained from his concerts to support orphaned children.”

O Holy Night

At the time of the Lord’s birth, the Jewish world was looking for Him.  Little girls dreamed of being the chosen one who would be God’s appointed mother of the Messiah.  The prophets, the seers and all were looking for something big to happen – the earth and the heavens were all pointing to a major event.

Widows Among You

By Jan Ross | Comments Off

Paul’s letter to Timothy is full of instruction for the church.  You will find it contains some of the strongest instruction to the Body of Christ found in the scripture.  Among Paul’s admonition to us, a few verses are directed to the subject of widows.  This small verse stands out as having much to say to all of us.

“But she that liveth in pleasure is dead while she liveth.”
(1 Timothy 5:6)

We’re All Leaders

By Jan Ross | Comments Off

Whether or not you are in any type of leadership position, you have the potential to lead people to Christ.  You have people who follow you in one way or another.  Paul was full of wisdom as he beckoned the people to follow him but only as he followed Christ.  Essentially, he was leading people to Christ through his life and the example he set with his daily activities and ministry outreaches.

Interestingly, Paul didn’t say “follow me” and just leave it there!  The words he added bring us to today’s thought . . . “Follow me as I follow Christ!”

A Problem Exposed

The words of the prophet Haggai exposed a problem: “Ye have sown much, and bring in little; ye eat, but ye have not enough; ye drink, but ye are not filled with drink; ye clothe you, but there is none warm; and he that earneth wages earneth wages to put it into a bag with holes. Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Consider your ways.”  (Haggai 1:6-7)
