Skinned Alive

We  had a retired minister help fill in at church services so one of ours could take a well deserved vacation.  He gave a sermon on Adam and Eve, and in that sermon he said something profound. He said Adam and Eve’s covering themselves with fig leaves after they had eaten the forbidden fruit was man’s first religious act.

Not Just Boring Rules

Leviticus 23:12-13  . . . you shall offer a male lamb a year old without blemish as a burnt offering to the Lord.  And the grain offering with it shall be two tenths of an ephah of fine flour mixed with oil, a food offering to the Lord with a pleasing aroma, and the drink offering with it shall be of wine, a fourth of a hin.

The Book of Leviticus used to be a yawner for me. All of those rules and regulations that the Hebrews had to obey. I’ m not under the Torah or the Law as a Christian, so why is it even in my Bible?  Then, I began to really study it. When I get to passages like this one, I begin to see the whole picture.

Forsaken

By Julie B Cosgrove | Comments Off

Jesus, right before he died on the Cross, quoted Psalm 22:1- “My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?”

He took on our sins as the Righteous Father turned His head, then Jesus in his death, defeated death.

Because of what Christ did today, on Good Friday, no one need ever ask that question again.

If anyone sins, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous, and He is the perfect offering for our sins, and not ours only but the sins of the world.  1 John 2:1-2

Wipe your Feet

One of the things our church does  each year during Holy Week is to wash feet the way Jesus washed the disciples’ feet at the Last Supper. The pastor and the elders wait at the altar with towels and tubs of water for anyone who wants to come forward. Feet can be stinky and are quite honestly not the prettiest part of our body. We can know someone for years and never see their feet. This ceremony can make you feel rather exposed, like being undressed. Perhaps you have participated in this ceremony as a washer or wash-ee. It’s a very humbling event.

How Am I to Know?

Genesis 15 :7-8    And he said to him, “I am the Lord who brought you out from Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to possess.” But he said, “O Lord God, how am I to know that I shall possess it?”

Perhaps the stories in the Bible are so meaningful because these were real people. They had great faith, but they also had doubts, fears and limited understanding of God and His power in their lives. Just like me at times. Perhaps just like you.  God had just told Abram his descendants would out- number the stars in the night sky.  It was God’s promise. He reminded him that He had brought him and his family and all of his possessions safely into this new land. That He, God, was the reason Abram left it all behind.  And Abraham asks, “How am I to know?”

Seeking Christmas

By Julie B Cosgrove | Comments Off

God looks down from heaven on the children of man to see if there are any who understand,  who seek after God.  Psalm 53:2

What a patient, loving God. This time of year people become charitable. They open their hearts and their wallets. They drop off toys for the poor, drop a bill or two in the red bucket, volunteer to wrap presents or feed the hungry.  They make gifts for the nursing home residents and bake goodies for the neighbors.   All because it is the season of giving.

Goodness Sakes

By Julie B Cosgrove | Comments Off

I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord;
I have no good apart from you.”   Psalm 16:2

I saw  on the news last night new atheistic banners that say we don’t need God at Christmas, just be good for goodness sakes.    Oh, how misguided!

Maybe that works for Santa Claus coming to town, but not in preparing the way for our Savior to come to us.   There is no good in man.  That is a misconception. No matter how hard we try, we can never be “good enough”  to stand before the Holy and Perfect God.  It is human nature to be prideful, selfish, envious, greedy and lust after things.   Sure, we can try hard, but perfection is not natural.
