What to Wear?

Psalm 93:1 The Lord reigns; he is robed in majesty; the Lord is robed; he has put on strength as his belt. Yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved.

David wrote this psalm hundreds of years before that first Easter, yet how beautifully it describes the risen Christ. What an opposite picture from the broken, naked body on the cross with soldiers dividing his clothes among them as he bled.

‘Ere the Two Should Meet

Faithfulness springs up from the ground, and righteousness looks down from the sky. Psalm 85:11

I love that image. Humanity and God meet somewhere in between our faith and His righteousness.

We worship a God who so desires our companionship that He sacrificed Himself to bridge the gap.  In other religions, mankind strives to reach a state of goodness so that the Holy can become a part of their lives. Few in those religions achieve that state. But for the Christian, all we have to do is admit we are not good enough and ask for mercy.  As Paul says in Romans, we have all fallen short.

In His lap

in Psalm 5, David pleads with God to “lead me in thy righteousness.”  What is the righteousness of God? And why does David have to be led into it?

Righteousness in the Bible is always being just, no matter what. God does not possess any prejudice, partiality or preference when dealing with His children.  He loves us each equally and judges us by the same law, His law of unconditional love and justice. To God, there are no grey areas.  If there were, there would be wiggle room for judgement.  Like human attorneys, He would be citing exceptions to the rules and trying to justify the if’s and but’s. But He doesn’t. What is law for you is law for me.

Heaven and Earth

Faithfulness springs up from the ground,
and righteousness looks down from the sky.  Psalm 85:11

Have you ever heard the term, “I’d move heaven and earth”? It means a person will do anything, even the impossible.  Fortunately, for the Christian, we don’t have to do the impossible. It has already been done on our behalf.  But that doesn’t mean we are to be totally passive. We do have our part in response. It is called being faithful.

Commit your way to the Lord;
trust in him, and he will act.
He will bring forth your righteousness as the light,
and your justice as the noonday.  Psalm  37:5-6

The Lord on High

The Lord on high…He is an immovable anchor cast in the storm. The Lord does more wondrous things than the noise of many waters. They cannot disturb His rest or rule. They cannot defeat His designs and purposes.

God is mighty to preserve His people from being ruined by these many waters and His people’s spirits from being terrified by the noise of them. He can, when He pleases, command peace in our lives. The unlimited sovereignty and unrelenting power of the awesome God we serve encourages His people, even in the midst of the most difficult storms of life.

When we think of New Year’s Eve, we immediately think of celebration—a new beginning, a fresh start, the old is past and the new lies ahead.  The world will celebrate with parties and feasts, fireworks and confetti, family and friends.

David wrote of a celebration in Psalm 145, one in which every believer should engage himself or herself every day of the year.
