GPS – Guided Path Source

By Julie B Cosgrove | 1 Comment

Yesterday after church I was to go to a committee meeting for a public service group  in which I am very involved. I had an hour, so I figured this would be no problem. I might even arrive about 15 minutes early – time to go over the minutes from the last meeting I had not attended and get caught up.

Run, don’t stumble

By Julie B Cosgrove | Comments Off

I was raised to hold my head up and not slouch, a sign of being proud of who I was. I learned to walk that way as well, with the library book balanced on my head- really. So occasionally I trip over cracks in the sidewalk, or bumps, or thresholds.

My husband used to grouse, “Look down at your feet and you won’t stumble so much.”  But then I’d miss so much if I always concentrated on my feet. I might miss a squirrel scampering to a tree or a butterfly flit by with its wings shining in the sunlight. Besides, always looking down at my feet is to be downcast- sullen and  introverted. In essence, neither is the right way to walk.

Iridescent Bread Crumbs

By Julie B Cosgrove | 3 Comments

My eyesight is poor. I have had glasses on my face since third grade. At times, my spiritual eyes are even worse. I just can’t see God’s hand in my life.

Do you know the story of Hansel and Gretel?  As they wandered into the forest, Hansel left bread crumbs behind to mark their way. But the birds and animals ate them.  At times, I feel as if all my bread crumbs leading down the right path have been chomped up as well, or blown off the walk, or rolled under leaves.  The trees of doubt loom over me and I become anxious. The road seems dark.

Leveled

And he came down with them and stood on a level place. Luke 6:17

When a friend was newly married they lived in an old duplex.  The building wasn’t level any more. The ground had settled. You could lay a ball on the floor and it would roll to the other side. Great fun for their cat and baby.  She figured she would get used to the tilt. Not really. Her home was a bit catty-wopus.  It affected what she did, how she walked, where they lay stuff down.  Her calves and the souls of her feet would ache. But, it also became the catalyst for them to save a bit of money so they could move.

Holy Disruption

Psalm 50:3   -   Our God comes; he does not keep silence; before him is a devouring fire, around him a mighty tempest.

Sounds pretty disruptive?  God is all powerful and mighty. With a blink of an eye or a flick of a hand He can part seas, stop the sun, raise the dead, and dispel evil from His presence.   But His love for His children is just as powerful and mighty.

A Problem Exposed

The words of the prophet Haggai exposed a problem: “Ye have sown much, and bring in little; ye eat, but ye have not enough; ye drink, but ye are not filled with drink; ye clothe you, but there is none warm; and he that earneth wages earneth wages to put it into a bag with holes. Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Consider your ways.”  (Haggai 1:6-7)

Step lightly

Your word is a lamp to my feet  and a light to my path. Psalm 119:105

A very familiar verse.  Amy Grant sang a beautiful song about this verse many years ago. (Yeah, I am humming it too.)  The verse says that God lights our path, and shines a light onto our feet.  But what it doesn’t say is that He  illuminates the path so we can see all around us. His word doesn’t act as halogen headlights to let us see into the distance.  It is a lamp- a little flashlight that gives out just enough radiance to help us look down and see where to step next, and maybe again. A few steps, and the light moves with us to reveal just a few more.
