Circle of light
By Julie B Cosgrove | Comments Off
For it is you who light my lamp; the Lord my God lightens my darkness Psalm 18:28
Every night before we retire, I flick on a little night light between the living room and the kitchen. It gives off just enough of a glow to maneuver around the room without tripping over things- shoes we left behind, one of the cats, or their toys. My husband is pre-dawn riser, so it makes it easier for his groggy eyes to see the path to the coffee pot. It also has a little glowing button on it that gives off a small circle of light. So does the DVD/cable box. So does the clock on the microwave and the one on our bed stand. Our computer even has a soft blue glowing button. All around us are little soft glowing lights. A few days ago when I heard a sound and got up in the middle of the night, I realized I am never truly in darkness in my house. It was a comforting feeling.

Mirror Image
By Julie B Cosgrove | 1 Comment
Anyone who listens to the Word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.” James 1:23
How can that be? How could someone forget what he or she looks like? We all spend a fair amount of time in front of a mirror grooming, and perhaps being disappointed our hair is not cooperating the way it should, or a new wrinkle has popped up near our eyes, or a blemish is surfacing. But that is not the image I think James is talking about.

Handel’s Messiah
By Jan Ross | Comments Off
“Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.” (Matthew 1:23)
One of the most majestic and anointed musical compositions of all times was written by George Frideric Handel in the 1700’s. One writer (1) stated, “As it turns out, The Messiah is either a Bible study with a beautiful concert attached, or a wonderful piece of classical music with a free Bible study included at no extra charge. I can’t decide which. I do remember reading that when Handel was alive, the Messiah was one of the most often performed pieces of music in concert, and that Handel gave away most of the profits obtained from his concerts to support orphaned children.”

“Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.” (Isaiah 7:14)
“Silent Night” has become an anchor for Christmas celebrations throughout the world. Its lullaby-like melody and simple message of heavenly peace can be heard from small town street corners in mid-America to magnificent cathedrals in Europe and from outdoor candlelight concerts in Australia to palm thatched huts in northern Peru. “Stille Nacht! Heilige Nacht!” can easily be called the world’s best-loved Christmas carol. It has been translated into nearly 300 languages and dialects. Its message of heavenly peace sets the theme for Christmas celebrations around the globe.

“And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.” ( Luke 1:30-33)

Hidden in My heart
By Julie B Cosgrove | Comments Off
Psalm 40:10 – I have not hidden your deliverance within my heart;
I have spoken of your faithfulness and your salvation;
I have not concealed your steadfast love and your faithfulness
from the great congregation.
When God touches our lives, it can be so powerful, so meaningful, so humbling that we keep it to ourselves. One time, that happened to me. It was almost four years before I openly revealed how God had blessed me so deeply. Was that wrong?

O Holy Night
By Jan Ross | Comments Off
At the time of the Lord’s birth, the Jewish world was looking for Him. Little girls dreamed of being the chosen one who would be God’s appointed mother of the Messiah. The prophets, the seers and all were looking for something big to happen – the earth and the heavens were all pointing to a major event.
