12-12

Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.  Romans 12:12

I am an orderly sort of person, tending to compartmentalize things.  At work, people would laugh at how neat my desk top and drawers were- everything laid out just so. Yes, I alphabetize my spices and hang my clothes according to color.

So when I see repetition in the Bible my spiritual ears perk up. It seems saying things in threes seem to be a way Scripture adds emphasis.  That is what I first noticed about this passage. Then I saw it was 12:12 – ah hah!

Eyes of the Heart

By Julie B Cosgrove | Comments Off

having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you . . . Ephesians 1:18

How often do we “see” with our hearts? In the quiet moments as we watch a small child blissfully sleeping?  Maybe when we see one family member actually thinking of another and doing something nice for them out of the blue.  When we see a person who has been recovering from a difficult surgery once again walk up the church aisles. When our Alzheimer’s parent or grandparent get a glimpse of recognition in their eyes and smiles.  Precious snatches of time captured in extra slow motion and etched in our emotions.

For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence,  for my hope is from him.  Psalm 62:5

Have you ever had a time when your needs were so great, your heart so torn, your questions so deep that all you could do is crouch in silence before God?  Words escaped you.  Yet your yearnings were felt by God. Your heart spoke volumes and connected with the Most High. Scripture tells us God hears. In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express.   Romans 8:26
And so we wait – wait in silence. But our hope can be strong. We can be sure that groan from deep within us will touch God’s ears and His heart.  He knows our deepest needs.  So, while you wait – have H>O>P>E> to keep you going-

Weaned and Quieted

Psalm 131

1 O Lord, my heart is not lifted up;
my eyes are not raised too high;
I do not occupy myself with things
too great and too marvelous for me.
2 But I have calmed and quieted my soul,
like a weaned child with its mother;
like a weaned child is my soul within me.

3 O Israel, hope in the Lord
from this time forth and forevermore.

It’s About Time

But as for me, my prayer is to you, O Lord.
At an acceptable time, O God,
in the abundance of your steadfast love answer me in your saving faithfulness.   Psalm 69:13

For a while there was a saying that became so popular it was cross stitched onto plaques and pillows, printed on T shirts and mugs and made into bumper stickers – Lord Give Me Patience and Give it to Me NOW!  We all hear that God’ s timing is not or own. When we go through a rough spell in our lives, sympathetic people hug our shoulders or pat our backs and whisper, “All in God’s time, all in God’s time.”

Hope Fully

. . . set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.  1 Peter 1:13b

In the  rural Texas Hill Country where flash flooding is common, people say, “I ‘ll be there, God willin’ and the creek don’t rise.”  In other words, it means, hopefully. It is a possibility, but actually things are not in my hands.   But in this verse, Peter says we are to hope FULLY.

Seeds and Sheaves

Those who go out weeping, carrying the seed, will come again with joy, shouldering their sheaves.  Psalm 126:7

Did you ever grow seed in a Styrofoam cup at school?   No one could see the seeds in that mound of dirt, but you watched everyday because you knew they were there.  You put the cup in a place where it ccould get sunlight. You followed the instructions and watered it. You waited patiently for the first little sprout to appear. Then when it did, you danced with joy.  Hope fulfilled.
