O Come, Emmanuel

By Jan Ross | Comments Off

Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Emmanuel.“  (Isaiah 7:14)

Emmanuel . . . God with us!  The history of this Christmas hymn is rich with meaning as you will see in the original translation.  Each verse of this poetic masterpiece praises the coming of the Savior by a different name:  Emmanuel, Branch of Jesse, Day-Spring, Key of David, Lord of Might, Wisdom, and Desire of Nations!

O COME, O COME EMMANUEL

O come, O come, Emmanuel,
And ransom captive Israel,
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appear.

Balancing Act

Prayer is as important to God as it is to us.  In God’s economy, it is as important to pray for one another as it is to pray for our own needs.

Moreover as for me, God forbid that I should sin against the LORD in ceasing to pray for you: but I will teach you the good and the right way” (I Samuel 12:23)

Intercession is not just for those who feel it is their ministry; it is for ALL of us. There is a principle of giving which flows throughout scripture that is the basis for intercession: “give and it shall be given unto you”.

Be Not Weary

By Jan Ross | Comments Off

Paul’s letter to the Thessalonians is full of good advice for servants of the Most High God as they live among people “which walk among you disorderly” (v.11).   But Paul instructs us, “But ye, brethren, be not weary in well doing.”  (2 Thessalonians 3:13)

Sometimes it’s hard to not grow weary in our well doing when others around us appear to be carefree in their disorderly lifestyles.

Coming and Going

“The Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.” Psalm 121:8

This is one of my favorite verses.  If I were a needlepointer or a caligrapher, I’d make a plaque with this saying on it and put it on the my front door.  The reason it touches me is it is so packed with truth. I know My Lord  is with me to strengthen me for the day when I go out from my home back into the world . I also know He is there when I come home, to give me peace and comfort.  But all through the day I am coming and going. He is there as well, now and forevermore.

Hold It Together

By Julie B Cosgrove | Comments Off

“…all things were created by him and for him. He is before all things and in him all things hold together.” Col 1:16-17

If I just keep it together, I’ll be fine. Every woman has said that in times of stress and trouble. It seems that is our lot in life. We juggle so many balls in the air that when one threatens to bounce of our hand and roll out of our reach, we hasten to grasp it and pull it back into sync with the others. Keep everything running smoothly. All ducks in a row.
