I visited my family home in the Texas Hill Country over the weekend because I had a book signing in town for my novel which is based there. The property overlooks a spring fed river. Usually the river is deep green with glistening ripples. But, there had been a welcoming deluge of rain to the drought stricken area. Thus, so much rain in so short of time had caused the river to rise. As I drove the winding road that followed its banks, I saw it was brown, not green.  That much water stirs the silt at the bottom. In a few days it will all settle back down the the river will become green and inviting again – perfect way to cool off on a Texas summer day when morning temperatures are already to soar into the 90′s.

What Will You Give Me?

After these things the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision: “Fear not, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.”
But Abram said, “O Lord GOD, what will you give me, for I continue childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?”(Genesis 15:1-2 ESV)

My Sunday

By Julie B Cosgrove | 2 Comments

At 5 o’clock in the morning the silence awoke me. No ceiling fan whir, no hum of the computer at my desk in my bedroom, and no whoosh of the AC unit. Outside my apartment window the world was pitch black, which is unusual since the grounds are usually lit up like a Christmas tree year round. Power outage. So, I went back to sleep lulled by the soft rain and occasional rumble of thunder. It was a long overdue, deeply peaceful and restful snooze. When I awoke and looked at my cell phone. It was 9:10 am!

Bank on It

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places . . . Ephesians 1:3

Can you wrap your mind around that statement?  We have already been blessed with every spiritual blessing.

When my husband passed away, I was given a certain amount of money from his life insurance policy. Since our insurance company has their own bank, I was also given a book of checks I could use so I could dip into that money reserve in case of need.  It is a comfort that I have a bit  of financial security in reserve just in case the need arises.Though I can never receive any more money from the life insurance, I know what I have is there whenever I need it.

In the Heat

By Julie B Cosgrove | Comments Off

The Lord appeared to Abraham by the oaks of Mamre, as he sat at the door of his tent in the heat of the day. Genesis 18:1

For a nomad, the heat of the day was the time to rest. Stay out of the sun. Living in Texas where the heat index has been 108 degrees, I understand that concept.  So, why did God appear to him then instead of in the cool of the morning or as the sun set and and the desert plains cooled?  Perhaps to get Abraham’s attention since no one should have been out and about that time of day. Maybe to see if Abraham would come out in the sweltering heat to offer him hospitality ( which he did).

Occupied

And they told him, “We came to the land to which you sent us. It flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit.  However, the people who dwell in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large. And besides, we saw the descendants of Anak there.  But Caleb quieted the people before Moses and said, “Let us go up at once and occupy it, for we are well able to overcome it.” Numbers 13:27-28,30

Can’t He Provide?

By Julie B Cosgrove | 1 Comment

He struck the rock so that water gushed out and streams overflowed.
Can he also give bread or provide meat for his people?”
   Psalm 78:20

Recently at a talk I gave on my book P.R.A.Y.I.N.G., a lady said she had gotten an email  cartoon picture of a man complaining that a small rock had bopped him on the head.  He asked why God had allowed that to happen. The next picture shows Jesus warding off thousands of huge boulders from crushing the guy.  Another lady said she was reviewing an old journal entry when she felt a bit down and distant from God. She used to pray as a teenager she could live near water. As she read that and remembered how much that had been her hearts desire so many years ago, she looked out over her swimming pool to the horizon of the lake near her house. Yes, God does hear.
