So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand.  Romans 7:21

Oh, how true! I gear myself up to start eating right and lose weight. I am all gung-ho, have prayed for strength and endurance. I know I must take better care of this temple called my body.  By midday, I am craving a chocolate bar, or worse, chocolate ice cream - even if I haven’t had it in weeks.   I tell myself tomorrow I will start exercising, then wake up with a killer backache, or stumble and jam my toe, or my allergies are aflame.  I promise I will spend a half hour every morning reading my Bible and praying over the Word, and the phone rings, the cat throws up, or the dishwasher floods. Really? Anything else want to happen?  Do you ever feel this way?

Fenced In

By Julie B Cosgrove | 1 Comment

I see our lives as fences. Today, everyone seems to want a privacy fence. Ones with wooden slats nailed closely together that obscure the neighbors’ views of your backyard.  It keeps people from watching what you are doing. Perhaps it thwarts the neighborhood gossips. But it also cuts us off from each others lives. If you try and peer through the thin gaps in the slats or an occasional knot hole, you get a distorted picture.

Prayers of Faith

By Julie B Cosgrove | 1 Comment

“And whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith.” Matthew 21:22

Can that really be true? Jesus said it. So it must be, right?  He said He was the Way and the Truth.  So why is it that so often our prayers go unanswered, or so it seems? Is it because we don’t have enough faith that the people we love die anyway, or cancer spreads, or divorce happens or jobs are lost? Did we not pray enough to stop a child from making wrong choices and going down wrong paths?  Does God have a sort of  faith Richter scale to measure  the intensity of each prayer before He decides to respond?  Does He shake His head and say, “Oh, that one is only a 2.5 on the scale, not worth my time” ?

A See of Wants

By Julie B Cosgrove | 1 Comment

Matthew 20:32 -34   And stopping, Jesus called them and said, “What do you want me to do for you?”  They said to him, “Lord, let our eyes be opened.”  And Jesus in pity touched their eyes, and immediately they recovered their sight and followed him.

If you think about it, isn’t that what we all want? It seems most of our lives, we humans can wander around spiritually blind. If we have any “insight” at all, it is limited at best.  Way too often we can’t see the big picture.

Bend it

May he bend our hearts toward him. Then we will follow him and keep his commands, laws, and rules, which he commanded our ancestors [to keep].  1Kings 8:58

I have a trash can in my kitchen. We inherited from a previous renter years ago.  I love it. It is the perfect size to hold trash bags. It has a domed lid and a  curved flap that slips back up into the dome whenever you want to throw in some trash.  Then you flip the flap back down closed and all the trashy smells are sealed inside. Works great, most of the time.

Fully Convinced

No distrust made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God,  fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised.  Romans 4:20-21

The “he” Paul refers to is Abraham.  Yes, Abraham’s faith grew as he gave glory to God. After all, he headed out on a journey into the unknown on God’s command.  He trusted God was leading him and his household to a new land full of promise.  When God told him he’d be a father of many nations, even at his age, Abraham believed.  Unfortunately, he believed it so well, he took matter into his own hands and impregnated a servant since he and Sarah were convinced that Sarah was barren. Thus began trouble in paradise.

Rest In Peace

My soul is content . . . when I remember you upon my bed, and meditate on you in the night watches.  Psalm 63:5a,6

Is that how you feel when you awaken in the middle of the night, or roll over one more time and see the clock has ticked away another half hour and you still can’t shut your eyes and shut off the world? Like the Princess and the Pea, is there a little something that keeps nagging at you and keeping you from peaceful sleep no matter how you try to cover it up?  It may be more than your mattress. It may be your foundation.
