Thanks primarily to the many opportunities that the internet offers, working from home is more popular than ever. There are many different types of work at home opportunities available and a wide variety of setups that suit a person’s particular requirements. Some people who work from home are employees of a company, enjoying the rights and protections that come with being employed by someone else. But, most people working at home are self-employed, either running their own business or freelancing on various projects.

Listed below are three popular work from home options.

Direct Sales

One of the quickest ways to start up a home business is to get involved in direct sales. A direct sales job essentially involves buying items wholesale from a company to sell to others for a profit. Some examples of direct sales opportunities include Melaleuca, Herbal Life, and PartyLite Candles among many others. Selling from home can comprise selling the items online, selling to friends through catalogs, or throwing sales parties in which groups of customers are introduced to the product. The main downside with direct sales is that the seller is usually required to buy some of the product up front before any sales are made. There are also generally sign up fees, and sometimes training fees, when beginning direct sales.

Internet or Affiliate Marketing

Working at home can also comprise selling items that you never see and never handle by working as an affiliate. Selling for other people through affiliate marketing is one of the fastest growing online work from home opportunities. By signing up as an affiliate with a seller, affiliates market items themselves and take a commission on the sales they bring to the seller. Affiliate marketers often sign up for many different programs in order to have several streams of income. In addition to their affiliate sales, many affiliates also prefer to have their own front end product to sell online. This can include an ebook, special report or software that they have commissioned and own the rights to.

Online Sales

Selling through a third party web site is also a popular way to be able to make an income from home. Selling items through a third party means no personal website maintenance, instead allowing the site owner to market the site and bring in customers. EBay, Half.com, Amazon, are examples of sites that follow this model. When a seller lists an item on a third party site they can take advantage of the traffic that is normally brought in through that site, leading to higher sales than would likely be seen running their own website. On the downside, the third party will get a percentage of the sale or a flat fee. To be profitable, most sellers maintain a large virtual inventory that is constantly overturning and must be replaced. Many of these items are used or collectible and are obtained through estate auctions, yard sales, and anywhere that people are getting rid of items inexpensively.
